Israelis have gathered across the country to mark 24 months since the Hamas-led attack on that fateful day in October 2023, as talks continued in the neighboring country over an end to the conflict in the Gaza Strip.

The assault resulted in over 1,200 people killed and 251 others abducted away to Gaza as captives. It was the most most lethal day for Jewish people since the World War II.

Israel responded by launching a military offensive in Gaza which has claimed more than 67,000 people, based on figures from the region's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its statistics are seen as reliable by the United Nations and other international bodies.

"Our bloodthirsty enemies have hit us hard, but they have not overcome us," the leader stated on that day.

He also vowed to "accomplish all the goals of the war: the homecoming of all the abducted, the removal of the Hamas regime and the promise that Gaza will not create a danger to Israel".

Memorial Events Across Israel

The national leadership delayed formal remembrance events until 16 October - after the conclusion of the festive season - but events still took place throughout the country on that day.

A remembrance service for the loved ones of Israelis who died in the Hamas incident was organized in the coastal city. Organized by the victims' relatives, it was aired across Israeli TV networks.

Hours earlier, a moment of silence was observed around the country.

Negotiation Discussions in Egypt

Simultaneously, the conflicting parties' delegations convened in the North African tourist destination of the Egyptian city for a continuing round of mediated discussions to discuss the terms of the proposal.

A senior delegate familiar with the talks revealed that an late session of indirect talks started at 19:00 Cairo time.

The source said the day's discussions ended without tangible results, amid conflicting views over the proposed Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas wants to guarantee Israel does not resume fighting after the opening period of the deal.

He noted that the negotiations are "tough and have yet to achieve any major advancement," but pointed out that mediators are striving to close the disparities between the conflicting groups.

Key Matters in Talks

  • A permanent ceasefire
  • The exchange of the prisoners still held by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
  • The pullout of troops from Gaza
  • Arrangements for relief supplies provision
  • Post-war management of the area

Public Sentiment

In the city's public square previously, young Hagar - whose brother survived the attack on the gathering, where 378 people were killed and dozens more were taken hostage by Hamas gunmen - explained: "No location feels like home any longer and until each abducted person are released no one will feel safe."

"Once we see all home once more, we can breathe once more. Then we can start to rebuild," she added.

In front of the leader's home in the capital, people congregated to show their solidarity for the families of the hostages. Israel says forty-eight stay in detention in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are thought to be surviving.

Activist a participant remarked: "It's necessary do any agreement necessary for the captives to be released. But we really want guarantees that we will be safe."

Opinion polls now frequently demonstrate that around seventy percent of Israeli citizens want the war to conclude in as payment for the liberation of the captives.

Gaza Circumstances

At the site of the gathering, those paying respects assembled to pay their respects.

From the site, the sound of military attacks and artillery could be heard just a brief space away in Gaza, where witnesses reported the severe Israeli attacks continued.

In the main city, attacks were noted in the morning of that day in the western district, sector and Nasr areas and in the eastern district of Sheikh Radwan, as well the camp to the north-west.

"As the night arrives, the dread appears with it," relocated Gaza City resident a mother, whose 17-year-old son was killed by an Israeli air strike last year, described.

"My family are terrified of the attacks. All the night we are resting together, clinging, notably my youngest child who puts his head on me throughout the night."

"Every second we check the news to see the situation. And I'm afraid that this truce will not be completed and that the conflict will resume to us."

Humanitarian Emergency

The healthcare center in Gaza City announced it had accepted the remains of several people by the midday, including a trio who lost their lives in an Israeli attack in the southern area.

Another medical facility in the southern city of that area indicated two more dead people had been transported. One of them was lost his life by Israeli forces while seeking assistance to the southern area, medical staff reported.
