England’s men’s team will commence their 2028 European Championship journey at the Etihad Stadium, assuming they achieve the anticipated passage for a championship taking place in the majority of the UK and the Republic of Ireland.
City’s stadium has not hosted an English men’s game since the spring of 2016, when the Turkish team were overcome 2-1 in a friendly, but is almost certain to stage the Three Lions for their opening fixture on June 10, 2028.
The English side are set to play their last two group stage games at Wembley, but, if they top Group B, their knockout stage opener would occur at the Newcastle stadium. Finishing second would mean commencing the playoffs at Everton’s Hill Dickinson Stadium.
The event was launched at an event in Piccadilly Circus on Wednesday night. Senior figures from European football’s governing body and the host football associations were barracked as they arrived the site by around fifty protesters, who called for Israel to be kicked out from the sport because of the Gaza crisis.
Banners were held up with slogans saying “Show Israel the red card” and “You are complicit”, while protesters chanted: “Kick Israel out.”
The first match of the tournament will be staged at the Principality Stadium in the Welsh capital, on June 9, 2028, a fixture that will feature the Dragons if they qualify.
Wembley will host both semi-finals and the championship match, which will be played on July 9, 2028 with a start time at late afternoon.
It is anticipated that an earlier kick-off, which will also be used for Champions League finals from the following campaign, will appeal to family audiences and help connect with a more diverse set of fans.
The Republic of Ireland are scheduled to play their first game at the Dublin Arena and the Scottish team would play similarly at the national stadium of Scotland.
Each host nation’s squad will enter the qualification process; two automatic spots will be set aside for any that do not reach the tournament through the qualification path.
The Birmingham venue and Tottenham Hotspur Stadium round out the nine tournament locations. Each one will hold at least one playoff fixture, with the quarterfinal matches staged at the national stadium of each host.
The draw for the qualifiers will be conducted in Belfast, which was dropped as a host city last year when it emerged Casement Park could not be renovated in time, on a date in late 2026.
“This will be a competition for the followers and a festival of everything we cherish about the football – its fervor and ability to foster unity.”
