While Beachgoers Fled Attack, Popular Photo Captures Beach Patrol Dashing ‘All Out’ In the Direction of the Site.

Alexandra Ching, someone who has spent her entire life as local of Bondi, has always considered the famous shoreline as her personal space. On that fateful weekend evening, she, like many others in the area, noticed cracking sounds ringing out around the neighbourhood.

“That was the initial assumption, but I reasoned it was too light and you couldn't spot any lights,” she explains. She left her apartment, she observed people “flooding up Bondi Road”. Their expressions she saw told her trouble had occurred.

While standing on the avenue, speaking to a pair who had run up the slope in their swimwear, she noticed someone approaching at her rear. It was a lifeguard, dashing in the direction of Bondi without shoes from the adjacent Tamarama beach – about 1.5km – while carrying a life-saving kit.

“I caught a voice saying ‘excuse me’, and when I spun around I spotted this flash of blue,” Ching describes. “He was zooming past. It was just him moving in the opposite way that the crowd was trying to escape from, while holding that sizeable pack and unshod … He moved into something that certainly every fibre in your being would signal you to run in the other direction.

“Just no hesitation, but just completely pedal to the metal sprinting.”

An Iconic Image of Bravery Amidst Tragedy

The photograph Ching captured of the lifeguard, now known to be Jackson Doolan, rapidly circulated as among numerous acts of valour in the aftermath of the terror attack.

Andy Reid, another lifeguard, noted that Doolan, called “Jacko”, ran from Tamarama beach to support the other members at Bondi, as well as to work with other rescuers, police and ambulance crews treating many victims.

Local Reaction and Support

Doolan’s account was just one of many to come out of the community, with the lifeguard clubhouse beside the site of the violence serving as a temporary medical station. Reports indicate that fellow lifeguards were also seen taking action, including going into the water to assist people in distress.

After the events, messages of gratitude circulated widely. A social media message shared gratitude for the individuals who demonstrated that “compassion will always overcome darkness”.

The squad of lifeguards later shared a statement, saying they were “processing what happened”.

“Our thanks go out to all for your kind words and support. We are touched by the care for our responders,” the team stated. “Eventually, we will recount our experiences in the belief that it aids those involved.”

Local Government Commendation

Waverley council, the administrative organization that hires many full-time lifeguards, remarked that the crew acted heroically from the second the incident started right into late that evening.

“We have heard so many powerful stories, but the widely-circulated image of Jackson Doolan, running from Tamarama to Bondi with a medical device so he could help save lives is remarkable,” stated a local official.

“Our lifeguards show selflessness every day in maintaining the safety of our world-famous coastlines secure for visitors, but what we saw on Sunday should be commended.

“As we grieve and come to terms with the horror of this brutal and barbaric act of violence, I think it is vital that we consider just how much good we have seen in the face of such darkness.”
